Traumatic brain injury is one of the most serious injuries that any person can suffer, and leads to long-term disability that can last over the rest of the person’s life.

Brain damage can be of two types-traumatic brain injury or acquired brain damage. Traumatic brain injuries are sustained as a result of a blow to the head. Such types of brain injuries can be seen when a person receives a blow to the head in different types of situations, like car accidents. In fact, motor-vehicle accidents account for some of the highest numbers of brain injury cases recorded in the United States every year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries are recorded inside the country every year. These injuries occur as isolated individual injuries or are combined with other injuries.

Traumatic brain injury can be caused by a sudden blow or jolt to the head, or can be in the form of a penetrating head injury. There may or may not be a visible head injury, and there may or may not be bleeding or any other external sign of the injury.

Apart from motor-vehicle accidents, brain injuries can also occur as a result of injuries to the head during slip and fall accidents, sports-related injuries, recreational accidents, physical violence, gunshots and assaults.

Whatever the type of injury or the cause of the injury, there is no denying the terrible toll that traumatic brain injury takes. In fact, brain injury is believed to contribute to most injury-related fatalities in the country every year.

Some groups of persons like children between the age of 0 and four, and teens between the age of 15 and 19, may be at a much higher risk of suffering a brain injury. Seniors above the age of 65 are more likely to sustain a TBI during a slip and fall accident.
