If you are a motorist  in a truck accident, you are at a much higher risk of being involved in fatalities, compared to the occupants of the truck. According to statistics by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Inspection, 78 % of the occupants of smaller vehicles that are involved in a crash with a large commercial truck, are killed. Motorists should be aware of safe driving around trucks.

Many accidents are caused by commercial truck drivers, who are speeding, driving aggressively, or distracted while driving. However, as the operator of a small passenger vehicle, you must increase your chances of being seen by a truck driver, and must reduce the risk of an accident as much as possible because ultimately, it is you and the occupants of your car who are at the highest risk of being injured or killed in the accident.

It is important to realize that you are sharing the road with a commercial vehicle that has a much longer braking distance. In other words, a truck takes a much longer time to come to a complete stop after the truck driver applies the brakes. That means that you must avoid cutting in front of a large commercial truck, because this will create an emergency braking situation that increases the risk that the truck will crash into your car.

Avoid driving in the truck driver’s blind spots. The driver may be unable to notice motorists driving in his blind spots, like the sides of the truck or right behind truck. Avoid being in these spots as much as possible, because it increases your risk of being involved in an accident. Just because you can see the truck driver, don’t assume that the driver can see you.
