Mail carriers in Los Angeles have the highest risk of being involved in a vicious dog bite that leaves them with injuries.

Mail carriers in Los Angeles have the highest risk of being involved in a vicious dog bite that leaves them with injuries.  The Postal Service has released data on the worst and most inhospitable cities in the country, and the city of Los Angeles was named the worst city for canine attacks on letter carriers during the most recent fiscal year.

Last year, in Los Angeles alone, there were 69 dog bites involving letter carriers.  In second place were San Antonio and Seattle, with 42 dog bite attacks involving letter carriers.

However, there’s some comfort in the data for Los Angeles letter carriers.  The statistics show that while Los Angeles continues to remain one of the most inhospitable cities, the number of attacks involving letter carriers has been dropping in the city.  Nationwide, there has been an increase in mail carriers being bitten while on the job with increase of 5% in such attacks reported.  However, in Los Angeles, the number of dog bite attacks involving letter carriers were down from 83 the previous year.

Dog bite attorneys believe that there is no reason to expect any drop in the city’s status as the most dangerous city in the country for letter carriers anytime soon.  The city has a large canine pollution which increases the risk for letter carriers.  The perennially warm weather in the city frequently puts dogs outside in the yard, which places them in contact with letter carriers.

Last year alone, there were 5,879 dog bites involving letter carriers across the country.  In two cases, the letter carriers died.  In one of those cases, the letter carrier was knocked down and suffered serious and fatal head injuries.  In the other case, the letter carrier suffered a heart attack during the dog bite incident.
