A group of researchers are involved in an effort to detect biological signals or biomarkers, that could help give doctors strong and reliable evidence of traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.  The research, believed to be one of the largest of its kind, will be based at New York University’s medical school.

The five-year study aims to find biological signals in persons who have suffered a brain injury, or are showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.  Currently, the techniques that are in place to detect a brain injury are not always effective in detecting an injury in time.  Very often, mild signs of brain injury may go undiagnosed.  Brain injury lawyers therefore find a significant time gap between the actual injury, and the detection of the injury, which further delays treatment.

According to the researchers, it is important to raise mental health to the same standards that we now have in place for physical health.  They are researching a simple test that can help detect these biological signals or biomarkers, which can in turn be used to determine if a person has suffered a brain injury.  A test could be administered to detect the presence of these biomarkers, and if these are found, it can quickly lead to a diagnosis.  Treatment can begin immediately, reducing the risk of any long-term impact of danger

Previous studies that have tried to locate strong evidence of brain injury have not been very successful.  However, that has not stopped private foundations and the federal administration from coming forward to finance new efforts in this direction.  For instance, at a Maryland institute, researchers are currently experimenting with a technique that could help locate post traumatic stress disorder biomarkers.
