Encouraging Seniors to Participate in Own Care Reduces Slip and Fall Risks

More than 50% of all women and 20% of men above the age of 50 can be expected to suffer a fracture after suffering from a slip and fall accident.

More than 50% of all women and 20% of men above the age of 50 can be expected to suffer a fracture after suffering from a slip and fall accident.  These persons may also be at a much higher risk of suffering a second slip and fall accident that could cause even more serious injuries.  A new study indicates to slip and fall lawyers that when senior citizens are encouraged to participate in taking care of their own health and safety and prevent falls, the results are likely to be much more effective.

It is very important to monitor and evaluate a senior citizen’s health and safety, once he has already suffered a slip and fall accident.  These persons have a much higher risk of suffering serious fractures like hip fractures after suffering a slip and fall.  These fractures may not just dramatically reduce the quality of life for a senior citizen, but may also increase the possibility of death.  Senior citizens may find it much more difficult to heal after suffering from serious fractures, because they may not be prime candidates for surgery.  It is very important to prevent another fracture once the person has already suffered one fracture in a slip and fall.

According to the study, that was published recently in the journal Osteoporosis International, many of the efforts aimed at helping senior citizens reduce the risk of a second fall accident fail, because seniors are not adequately encouraged to be involved in these prevention measures.  The researchers believe that it is important to help seniors identify fall risks, and discuss these with their physicians.  When a senior has suffered a fracture in a slip and fall accident from a low height, it may be an indication of bone health issues that must be addressed to prevent another fall.
